Mission

50 words

Carminica is a publishing firm built on long‑term support, creative autonomy, and author earnings. We bypass the need for agents via direct open communication and negotiation, personally vet submissions and authors, and never take away authors' rights. Our focus is simple: helping authors own their work and profit from it.

Why this business is necessary

335 words

In traditional publishing, authors must find an agent that both A) will take their work, B) works with their genre, and C) has existing relations built with fitting publishers. They then must hope their work is D) read by the publisher, then E) accepted, before they can consider getting their work out there. From there, they must then F) sign away their rights to publish or republish their work with any other firm, G) sign away their intellectual property (ownership) rights to their material, and H) agree to publishing terms they have little say in. If they make it that far, then their book must generate an average of $10,000 in sales (varies by firm) before they can earn revenue for themselves. If that point comes to pass, then they will make an average of $2 per book sold. In contrast, Carminica eliminates each of the listed challenges-- no agent needed, we read all submissions and have clear communication, never take authors' rights, and enshrine their right to have a say in all matters related to their work. We bypass the myriad of middlemen required by the industry standard model to enable higher earning potential, and also prohibit the use of AI in any way relating to the creation of materials. In our model, the author is our primary focus. Unlike traditional publishing, where authors are cut off after submission, we keep them at the center of both the creative process and the business side. That means the entire lifecycle — from manuscript to earnings — is as front-end to us as selling to readers. In summary, we provide the professional quality service of book publishing in conjunction with pro-labor policies and creative autonomy practices. Our company grants our authors the same service as other major publishing houses while never claiming their intellectual property or control thereof. Furthermore, our business offers significant opportunities for authors that seek to earn from their literature as well, as we generally pay out 70% of profits to the author.
