Mission
52 wordsThe mission of StyleEp is to make the 50 million people living with epilepsy worldwide more comfortable and confident while undergoing long term electroencephalogram (EEG) testing. We also aim to use our brand to create community and promote mental health awareness in epilepsy. A portion of profits will go towards this cause.
Why this business is necessary
473 wordsThere are currently 50 million people living with epilepsy worldwide. The leading test that the vast majority of epilepsy patients go through to determine if and when they are having seizures is called an electroencephalogram (EEG). Oftentimes this test can last between 24-72 hours in which patients have wires attached to their head which are connected to an amplifier box. The wires on the head are covered by a gauze wrap. Some patients have this test performed in the hospital, while many others take the test home. Patients will likely have to undergo multiple of these tests in their life because it is used to determine the correct medication levels and a clean EEG is required for patients to drive in the US. The wires, box, and gauze are a big eyesore and patients are oftentimes embarrassed to go anywhere or see anyone simply because of the way they look. In addition, the wires and the amplifier box get in the way of everyday activities like cooking, cleaning, and even going to the bathroom. The amplifier box can also be very uncomfortable to sleep next to. StyleEp has a range of products including specialized hats, hoodies, and undershirts which completely disguise the presence of an EEG test so that no one would know that a patient is wearing it. The hoodie and undershirt have hidden pockets to hold the amplifier box in place so that a patient doesn't have to constantly worry about moving it around. Patients cannot use traditional hats or hoodies to cover the test for several reasons. First, traditional fabric blends could overheat the test or melt the glue that supports the wires, thus negatively impacting the test's results. Secondly, EEG technicians choose to use different amounts of gauze from test to test. Our products are completely adjustable in a way that doesn't impact the wires, so that no matter how much gauze the technician uses, our products will still fit and the sizing is specialized so that our products will cover the test completely in a way that traditional products cannot. All of these products have provisional patents. We will have one other product which is not patented yet (it will most likely be patented by May 1). Its purpose is to make patients more comfortable while they sleep. We are currently doing a study with a number of neurologists, nurses, and technicians to make sure that our products will not hinder the test in any way and to gauge a better overall idea of common complaints while undergoing EEG testing and mental health. One additional benefit of our products is that by using fun styles and patterns, the test becomes a little less daunting and gloomy for patients, especially children. Psychology is heavily tied to neurological disorders like epilepsy, so patients being calmer can actually improve test results.
